Planned Cycle Routes

Comber - Dundonald - Belfast (The Comber Greenway)

The Comber Greenway is now complete from Belfast as far as Abbey Rd (although some carriageway use is presently unavoidable along Sydenham Rd). The route will be completed by autumn 2008.

Carryduff - Belfast

As part of resurfacing on Saintfield rd, DRD Road Service is providing shared cycle/pedestrian tracks on widened footways on both sides of the road between Cairnshill Rd and Brackenvale service station. Roads Service intends to use cycle lanes on the approach to junctions to ensure priority for cyclists over leaving/joining traffic. All being well, future phases will continue the facilities to Carryduff and back in stages toward Belfast, combining with existing bus lanes in the city bound direction.
Work should start sometime in early 2007.

Lisburn - Belfast

On the Lisburn to Belfast route (A1) shared cycle tracks have been provided on sections of the road in both directions between Belsize Rd and Dunmurry. There is no legislation in place yet so no signing will be done for a while. The process of suplimenting the shared facilities with on-road advisory cycle lanes has been started and will continue later this year; there is also a considerable length of bus lane in the Belfast bound direction as far as Finaghy; this is operative 7.30 to 9.30a.m. and gives an improved cycling environment.

Belfast Metropolitan Transport Plan

The Belfast Metropolitan Transport Plan (BMTP) was launched by the Minister for Regional Development on 30th November 2004. This plan, the first of its type for the Belfast Metropolitan Area (BMA), takes forward the strategic initiatives of the Regional Transportation Strategy (RTS) for Northern Ireland 2002-2012.

The BMTP is the local transport plan for the BMA, which will deliver a phased and costed implementation programme of transport schemes to 2015. The implementation of these proposals will be subject to detailed economic appraisal, funding availability and statutory processes.

The BMTP details future plans for possible cycling infrastructure provision and can be accessed here
