Come to County Antrim to cycle through the stunning rugged coastline that merges seamlessly into a landscape of historical glens. There is no better way to see some of Northern Ireland’s top tourist spots including the Giant’s Causeway and Bushmills Distillery than from two wheels. Why not take a ferry over to explore Rathlin Island? If you are lucky, this tranquil setting will provide a chance encounter with puffins and seals.
Rolling Countryside
The “orchard county”, as Armagh is often referred to, is a beautiful cycling destination and one of the true hidden treasures of rural Ireland. Explore the network of country roads - May is a great time to visit when the orchards are a mass of pink and white flowers. Alternatively, go off-road in Gosford Forest Park or in Craigavon Lakes on the Family Cycle Trail, two great destinations for those seeking an adventure by bike.
City and Sea
A county of unparalleled beauty, cycle along the coastline and discover award winning beaches and stunning seascapes. The walled City of Derry is of enormous historic interest, and many parts of the city can be explored on bike. In the south of the county, meander through The Sperrins and its numerous glens and rivers and you will discover a unique landscape, rich in natural and archaeological heritage as well as folklore.
Stunning Mountains
Take in a breathtaking world of mountains, loughs and islands. Exploring County Down by bike is the perfect way to experience the dramatic mountainscape and coastline. The long distance trail around Strangford Lough is picture perfect and great for spotting wildlife – look out for brent geese and seals. Also explore the woodland areas in the pretty estates of Castlewellan and Castle Ward which provide great off-road routes.
Lakeland Treasures
Fermanagh is renowned for its lakelands and laid back pace of life. The iconic Kingfisher Trail takes you through some wild and beautiful country, over bridges, past old cottages and to places so remote and undisturbed that you might forget what a car sounds like. You will experience great views of Lough Erne as well as pass by some of Fermanagh’s top attractions including the Marble Arch Caves and numerous National Trust properties. Peaceful Valleys
The top attraction for cyclists in Tyrone is The Sperrins. A designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, this mountainous region is a natural blend of peaks, forests, valleys, lakes and rivers. There are many stunning routes where you will frequently find yourself cycling in solitude.
Urban Oasis
This Victorian city, steeped in culture and industrial heritage, is just waiting to be discovered by bike. Also, the city's many parks and green spaces, such as Ormeau Park provide traffic-free, family-friendly bike rides. Belfast also boasts two mainly traffic-free routes stretching into County Antrim and County Down. The Comber Greenway follows the trail of a disused railway line as far as the edge of Strangford Lough and the Lagan and Lough Cycle Way passes along the River Lagan and Belfast Lough, right into the heart of the city.
